We kept checking the AllTrails app thinking we were off trail, but we were right on route. The national monument protectsacres of volcanic landscape, while the adjacent national conservation area protects an additionalacres. Two major state highways border the monument and conservation area and both are accessed via Interstate monunent It was an enjoyable hike in the winter, though I imagine it gets very hot in the summer due to the lack of shade.

Backcountry usage in the national conservation area does not require a natiomal, although visitors are encouraged to notify a ranger of their plans to help monitor usage.
Easy walk but not a lot going on for the majority of it. Does this place or activity offer free parking?
Flora and fauna [ edit ] While known more for its geologic features than for its wildlife, the park is home to golden eagles, red-tailed hawks, prairie falcons, great-horned owls, black bears, mule deer, elk, coyotes, mountain lions and bobcats.
Special care was taken to mark the safest route into the depths of the caves with reflective tape. Had fun seeing the cave and the volcano!! The trails and scenery are beautiful and the staff are very friendly and informative.
The hiking is not terrific but the area is definitely worth a look. There is so much history, and so much to see in the Grants area, that a couple of good maps, along with guidance from one of the rangers, will make it much more interesting and really save you time in the long run. El Malpais pronounced el-mal-pie-EES means “the badlands”, so named due to the volcanic features such as lava flows, cinder cones, pressure ridges and complex lava tube cave systems that dominate the landscape.

Is this attraction a “must-see” location? The park’s visitor center has a few books, postcards, and other souvenirs available for sale. We’ll be flying into Albuquerque and leaving Thanksgiving day.
The park was also the home of a transplanted bison herd from untilbut the herd’s preference for roaming onto private lands led to their relocation. Additional camping options can be found north of the park in the town of Grants. This trail as written was completely fine for our dog except for the scrambling near the end ; the trail literally only crosses volcanic rock twice for maybe 10 feet total.

It also depends on the time of year because your amount of daylight will matter as will the temperature and weather conditions summers usually mean afternoon rain. The area has been inhabited for over 10, years, and historic and archeological sites provide reminders of past times.
These two features provide the crustal weaknesses that recent magmatic intrusions and Cenozoic volcanism are attributed to. So far I’ve listed: Trail is well marked with cairns. The Cibola Mslpais Forest conserves large natural areas, wildlife, and habitats in the surrounding region as well.

The caves are great – but you need to bring the right stuff to venture into them, gloves, hard hats, lights, long pants, jacket and good shoes.
